Abstract
    Laboratory rearing of Pecten maximus has provided the opportunity for a detailed study of shell and hinge metamorphosis, a useful basis for studying the phylogeny. The larvae of P. maximus distinguished from other bivalve larvae (e.g. Mytilidae) on the features of the shell, hinge excluded. On the other hand, the observation of the hinge allows specific identification of a prodissoconch of P. maximus only 3 days old.
