Abstract
Coastal defence is a major function of Dutch dunes. The dunes protect extensive, densely populated low-lying hinterlands. Defence measures are costly. They have tamed the natural dynamics of the dunes and tend to decrease their conservation values. While accepting coastal defence as a primary function. how and to which extent can we (re)introduce dynamics? We present ideas on combinations of civil technics and nature technics. valuable from the viewpoint of ecologists. Alternatives which add to the natural values of the dunes and could even be cheaper than the prevailing ones challenge ecologists. engineers and politicians.
