Abstract
    The system of dune management decisions centres round the management plan of operations ('beheersplan'). Input to the system are the requirements set by the functions which are decided for the dunes (e.g. coastal defence, nature conservation, drinkwater catchment, recreation). The priority of functions is generally decided outside the dune manager' s environment by policy making agencies. Output of the decision system is the influence the manager has on the dune system. The central position in the dune system is occupied by a set of abiotic and biotic processes. Input is a number of environmental parameters (factors), output is the landscape of the dunes. The dune manager has to intervene when this landscape does not meet the requirements of the selected functions. He can do this directly or through the parameters. The latter creates a more natural landscape and is preferred from the nature conservation point of view. Research is needed to predict the outcome of his operations.
