A review of swordfish research, fishing, processing, trade, and consumption in Chile. Chilean fishermen conduct the largest swordfish fishery in Latin America. This document examines historical developments through the mid-1990s and provides some indication of future trends in the swordfish fishery. This country chapter is desinged to provide readers with a detailed summary of available information concerning swordfish and related fisheries. Important topics include: species, fishing grounds, catches, fleet, fishing gear and method, ports, companies, processing, transshipments, trade (exports and imports), domestic consumption, research, bycatch, foreign fishing, joint ventures, international relations, enforcement, and future trends.
