Abstract
Solar Lake which is a hypersaline pond on the shore of the Gulf of Elat, is chemically stratified during most of the year. Blue-green algae from thick stromatolitic mats, organic matter exceeding the grazing potential of the fauna. This excess of organic matter supports a rich supralittoral fauna. There are 19 animal species known, among which six species of Coleoptera that are the most important grazers and predators in the Lake. This unusual type of biotic diversity is discussed. The fauna of Solar Lake is compared to that of other hypersaline waters of Sinai and in parallel. the historical stages in the evolution of the Lake's biota are discussed.
