Abstract
Leander squilla was successfully cultured in the laboratory in small 50 I aquaria equipped with an inside sandfilter system, as well as in large 500 I seawater aquaria. The entire life cycle, which lasted 7 months at 20 °C was studied. The larval development of single specimens was followed for 3 months, and the number and duration of the different larval stages were determined. It was found that at least six and at the most 11 larval moults were necessary for the development to the post-larval stage. Studies on the influence of various temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 °C) on development, growth, and survival showed that 25 °C was the most favourable temperature. Furthermore the influence of the culture volume, as well as the influence of the bottom surface area of the culture vessel on the development of the larvae were studied. Males and females could be successfully identified at the age of 3 months by the sex appendix of the male. Preliminary experiments on the artificial incubation of eggs yielded a hatching rate of about 5 % live larvae.
