Abstract
The influence of the food quality and of the presence of a polychaete in the cultures, on the reproduction rate of the harpacticoid copepod Tisbe holothuriae, was tested out in 200 ml cultures. During a first series of experiments the copepods were fed two different artificial diets. The production was estimated by counting the number of ovigerous females, which where taken out of the culturing vials at regular intervals. After 56 days the production of ovigerous females fed on a vegetable diet (Cerophyl) totalized 2,622 animals, i.e. an average dry weight production of 0.00724 mg/ ml/ day; culturing on aquarium fish food (Tetramin) resulted in 6,065 ovigerous females, i.e. an average dry weight production of 0.01499 mg/ml/day. Only the latter food source has been used during the second series of experiments. Mixte cultures of Tisbe holothuriae and Capitella capitata produced 5,090 females within 71 days, whereas the control culture (Tisbe alone, on Tetramin) gave 11,913 ovigerous females during the same period of time. These experiments prove that Tisbe holothuriae can be cultured on artificial diets, and that the results are better when the food is of animal nature. The presence of Capitella capitata in the cultures appeared to be a limiting factor in the production of the harpacticoïd copepod.
