Abstract |
Five species of Anostraca from Israel: Branchipus schaefferi, Branchinecta ferox, Streptocephalus torvicornis, Chirocephalus neumanni and Ch. bairdi were added to various concentrations of an algal suspension of Scenedesmus obliquus grown on domestic sewage. All the species survived and grew well in this environment even at a concentration of 5 x 106 cells/ ml, The grazing efficiency on algal removal was measured for each species, a maximal efficiency of 25 x 106 cells/ml per shrimp per day was observed. It is assumed that an even higher efficiency is attained by these "swimming filtrators" at very high algal concentrations. After depletion of the Scenedesmus by grazing, the Chlorella sp developed. Streptocephalus torvicornis and Chirocephalus neumanni successfully grazed on both algal species, while the other species were unable to use Chlorella sp. The potential applications of converting algae cheaply grown on sewage into animal crustacean biomass are discussed. A food chain consisting of bacteria-algae-anostracans-fish can be considered as an efficient tertiary treatment and a promising possibility of using sewage in aquaculture. |
