Abstract
Scientific research on the functional diversity of marine ecosystems is growing rapidly. This chapter overviews the main concepts and multiple tools used in trait-based assessments of functional diversity and presents some advice on their use applied to marine fish assemblages. Furthermore, the main known patterns of functional diversity of marine fishes at different spatial and temporal scales as well as changes as a result of climate change and anthropogenic impacts are also included. The chapter is designed for students and researchers who wish to get a synthesis on different tools and current knowledge, to guide the choice of the best approach for their research.
