Abstract
    Marine fishes comprise animals belonging to five different classes (Myxini, Petromyzontida, Chondrichthyes, Actinopterygii, and Sarcopterygii) and exhibit high diversity, with more than 16,000 known species. This high species diversity is reflected in the wide taxonomic and morphological diversities that characterize marine fishes, which evolved to allow them to live in all ocean areas, from coastal and transition zones such as estuaries or coastal lagoons to the great abyssal depths. Life-history patterns encompass extreme situations of short life-cycles and high fecundity as well as their contrasting great longevity, late sexual maturation, and low fecundity. This chapter provides a brief synthesis of fish diversity, illustrating with some examples the multiplicity of species, forms, habitats, and life-history patterns.
