Abstract
Gonadotropin (GtH) controls oocyte maturation in two stages: acquisition of oocyte maturational competence (OMC) followed by maturation-inducing hormone- (MIH)-mediated resumption of meiosis. OMC acquisition is marked by increased heterologous (oocyte-granulosa cell) and homologous (granulosa cell-granulosa cell) gap junctions (GJ). GtH-induced OMC and perhaps also GJ formation seem to be mediated by protein kinase A (PKA) and antagonized by protein kinase C (PKC). Although exposure to MIH causes heterologous GJ to uncouple during late maturation, this event is temporally dissociated from meiotic resumption. We conclude that (1) increased GJ are partly responsible for the increased oocyte sensitivity to MIH during the first stage of maturation, and (2) meiotic resumption occurs independently of GJ uncoupling during the second stage.
