Abstract
The effects of cortisol on the hepatic expression of rainbow trout estrogen receptor (rtER) and vitellogenin (rtVg) were studied in vivo and in vitro. In previtellogenic trout, cortisol implantation strongly decreased rtER mRNA levels, and to a lower extent those of Vg mRNAs. In aggregated cultured hepatocytes, both basal and E2-stimulated rtER messenger levels were consistently inhibited by dexamethasone (Dex) treatment, demonstrating the direct effects of glucocorticoid inhibition on liver cells. Moreover, as the half-life of the rtER mRNAs was not affected by Dex, this inhibition is likely mediated by a transcriptional repression of the rtER gene.
