Abstract
Homogenates derived from mono-sex populations, including XX, XY and YY genotypes, of sexually differentiating 8-13 day post fertilization (dpf) fish were incubated with super(3)H-androstenedione or super(3)h-17 beta -estradiol. Androstenedione was metabolized into at least seven readily identifiable compounds. During this period, testosterone production increased 2 to 3 fold in the XY genotype, but did not increase in XX genotypes, suggesting a sex-specific difference in testosterone synthesis. There was no detectable production of estrone or 17 beta -estradiol from the metabolism of androstenedione. 17 beta -estradiol was metabolized into at least five metabolites including estrone and several unknowns, but was not specific to genotypes.
