Abstract
Histological evidence from Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus L.) supports the theory that there are two critical decision periods in the maturation cycle of salmonids. The first occurs in autumn, affecting testicular organization and spermatogonial formation; the second occurs in spring, affecting the formation of cysts and spermatocyte production. Food restriction in autumn or spring is not an effective method of suppressing maturation in Arctic charr.
