Abstract
    Egg neutral and polar lipid fatty acid profiles were examined from seven reproductively isolated walleye populations from central North America. We wanted to test the hypothesis that fatty acid profiles were more variable in the neutral lipid, which has primarily a caloric function, than in the polar lipid, which has structural as well as caloric functions. Proportions of two structurally important fatty acids, 16:0 and 22:6(n-3) were much less variable in the polar lipid than in the neutral lipid among the seven populations. A brief review of fish egg lipid and fatty acid function is also presented
