Abstract
Multispectral remote sensing data were collected along the U.S. shoreline of Lake Ontario as part of the International Field Year on the Great Lakes (IFYGL) program in Lake Ontario. Data were processed to show the distribution of Cladophora (benthic algae) in the nearshore zone and to estimate the standing crop. The present report deals with Cladophora distribution in the region from Niagara to Rochester, New York.

The results show an extensive growth and development of Cladophora in the study area. Approximately 66% of a 350 meter wide nearshore bottom zone in the western portion of the lake is covered by Cladophora. The results demonstrate the potential of remote sensing technology for determining the distribution of benthic communities.
