| Abstract |
Blue-green algae form an important part of marine Vegetation. Their tolerance to varied environmental conditions suggests that there may be few marine habitats in which they do not occur, Despite this, there has been little attempt to isolate in pure culture any of the common forms occurring in inshore marine environments and to study their physiology and nutrition. Such data, besides its contribution to problems of algal metabolism, would help in evaluating the Status of blue-green algae in the productivity of the sea. A simple Isolation technique patterned after known methods (Allen, 1952; Lewin, 1959) has allowed Isolation of a number of forms occurring in inshore marine environments. A description of the organisms in culture and limited data on growth and nutrition of certain selected cultures is presented. |
