Abstract
Phylogenetic analyses of partial sequences of the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene cluster indicate that specimens identified as Pupilla bigranata from the Rhine valley in Germany and from central Ukraine belong to Pupilla triplicata, whereas specimens preliminarily identified as P. bigranata from 2 populations from Hesse in Germany belong to Pupilla muscorum. The P. triplicata morphs from the Rhine valley and from Ukraine resemble P. triplicata with regard to shell size, but differ from typical P. triplicata in the lack of a distinct columellar tooth. Moreover, the morph from the Rhine valley is more ovate than typical P. triplicata. The specimens from Hesse resemble P. muscorum with regard to shell size and shape but differ from typical P. muscorum in the presence of a palatal tooth. Such a P. muscorum morph was also found sympatrically with P. triplicata in the Rhine valley. Our study shows that different Pupilla species have been lumped under the name P. bigranata. Thus, the identities of morphs from different regions previously identified as P. bigranata need to be checked using molecular methods.
