Abstract |
Seafood is a necessity food item. Seafood demand by households increases with income. This chapter uses population and income projections to understand future demand for seafood. Findings suggest an increase in demand for seafood driven by continuing population growth and rising income. By 2050, most people will fall in the upper-middle of the income distribution, with most residing in the Asia region. Given that marine capture fisheries have reached their potential, supply from aquaculture can play an important role in filling the supply-demand gap. As the leading region in aquaculture production, seafood consumers, and seafood traders, the future of seafood markets in the Asia-Pacific region will be extremely dynamic. |
