Abstract
Anthropogenic warming impacts the survival rates, spatial distributions, and phenology of marine species. Additionally, cyclical climate oscillations influence species presences and must be considered when predicting the impacts of ocean warming on species distributions. This chapter highlights several studies that document the influence of cyclical climate oscillations on species distributions and focuses on one study that examines the impact of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on species distributions in the South Atlantic Bight in the southeast United States continental shelf. The case studies suggest that, for some species, the influence of bottom temperature and salinity on species’ presence depends on the phase of the NAO. This suggests that some species’ responses to climate change will largely depend on the phase of the cyclical oscillation. Considering the impacts of ocean warming as well as cyclical climate oscillations on species distributions is imperative for accurate management responses to anthropogenic climate change.
