Abstract
This chapter reviews the development of UK policy in relation to marine nature conservation and the development of the UK Marine Protected Area (MPA) network. It considers the contribution that the UK MPA network is making to sustainable development in UK seas alongside wider marine management initiatives. Challenges and issues associated with the designation and management of MPAs are highlighted together with possible opportunities to better achieve sustainable development in UK seas. While good progress has been made in designating a network of MPAs, effective management is not yet in place for many sites. There is also a paucity of monitoring data to assess the contribution that MPAs are making to sustainable development. The chapter concludes that wider measures beyond designation and management are required if the UK vision of clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse oceans and seas is to be realised.
