Abstract
Many coastal forest wetlands are turning into marshes on account of sea-level rise. As coastal forests flood more frequently and their soils become saltier, the trees die, leaving behind ‘ghost forests’ of standing dead trees called snags. In addition to the loss of carbon uptake from the living trees, decomposing trees also release carbon, and snags facilitate the transport of GHGs from the soils. However, the magnitude of these emissions is not well constrained.
