| Abstract |
Bycatch, an issue intertwined in the history of fishery science, has played variousmanagement roles within ocean fisheries over the past century. It did not, however,until the late 1980's and 1990's, become a featured component of the complex offishery science issues concerned with defining mortalities associated with target andnon-target fisheries. Bycatch literally burst from the gate and became a priority issuein fisheries research when it became increasingly evident that bycatch resulted in thecapture a variety of sealife and could result in the endangerment of non-targetedliving marine resources including turtles, marine birds and mammals, and in someinstances non-target species of fish. The following report provides a cursory historyof bycatch issues and progress being made towards a reduction in its capture andlowering of the discard mortality. |
