| Abstract |
The ecology and systematics of interstitial polychaetes was studied from 1980 to 1982 at the island of Helgoland (German Bight). Sixteen species of the families Polygordiidae, Protodrilidae, Nerillidae, Dinophilidae, and Diurodrilidae were identified. By means of SCUBA diving, population dynamics and reproductive periodicity of 9 of the 11 species inhabiting subtidal sediments were extensively studied. The total numbers of polychaetes investigated show a clear annual correlation with water temperature in 1981; highest densities were found during the warmest season. The life span of most species is probably 10 to 15 months, with the exception of Polygordius lacteus which may reach an age of more than one or two years. All species show limited reproductive periods during the year, and populations frequently consist of individuals of two generations. |
