Introduction:The Belgian Case study has focussed on the (structural planning and management of the presently) unbuilt space in the Flemish Coastal Zone. In this respect the Flemish Coastal Zone means the terrestrial part of the Belgian Coastal Zone, excluding the shallow offshore sea. Within the Flemish Coastal Zone, the emphasis lies on the struggle for the unbuilt space in the polders, running in conjunction with dunes. The dunes themselves, the sandy beaches and intertidal saltmarshes play a minor role in the case study. The Bufferzone between Blankenberge and Zeebrugge is taken as the major, but not exclusive illustration. |
