| Abstract |
Ernogrammus walkeri is described from 48 specimens collected from Monterey Bay to San Miguel Island, California, within the littoral and sublittoral zones to a depth of 21.3 m. It appears to be nocturnal and inhabits rock crevices. Its four longitudinal lateral line canals extend through series of relatively elongate, troughlike bony tubules, each with a posterior process inclined posterodorsally or posteroventrally and terminating in a pore. Unlike those of its Western Pacific congener, E. hexagrammus, these tubule processes are inclined in an irregular sequence. Ernogrammus walkeri is further distinguished from E. hexagrammus by its unbanded pectoral fin, free branchiostegal membrane, and meristics of the axial skeleton. |
