Abstract
Five new species of Careproctus (Liparidae) of the subgenusCareproctus s.str. are described from the Barents Sea and adjacent waters: Careproctus macrophthalmus sp. n., C. deryugini sp. n., C. knipowitschi sp. n., C. tapirus sp. n., and C. telescopus sp. n. Analysis of characters of all 16 species of this subgenus permitted us to separate nine of them (from the North Atlantic and adjacent Arctic regions) into the group of longfinned species characterized by common characters: vertebrae 59–63; rays D 53–57, A 47–51, P 29–34, C 11–12; no postorbital pore; teeth simple; lower lobe of pectoral fin longer than its upper lobe; and pink coloration of living specimens. They differ in proportion and form of head and body, presence (or absence) of a guanine silvery layer in coloration, pupil form (round or longitudinally oval), mouth position (oblique or horizontal), pectoral fin position, disk form, eye size and gill-slit size, and development (or lack there of) of cactus-likeprickles on the skin. Among long-finned species, characteristics like the longitudinally oval pupil help to discern the slit-eyed Careroctus species (C. dubius, C. macrophthalmus, C. deryugini, C. knipowitschi, C. tapirus, and C. telescopus).
