| Abstract |
Five new species of Apogon -anisolepis, robinsi, phenax, pillionatus and xenus -are described and figured, based on collections by the writers and their associates throughout the West Indies. Having the scales elsewhere on the body twice as numerous as those in the lateral line, anisolepis stands alone and we cannot ally it closely with other cardinalfishes. A. robinsi, phenax and pillionatus all are closely related to each other and to the described species planifrons; robinsi is the most dis- tinctive member of this group-having a premaxillary tooth patch that continues laterally outside the mouth so that many of the teeth are exposed when the mouth is closed -while the other species are distinguished mainly on features of pigmentation and gill-raker counts. A. xenus, a species that lives in sponges, is close to the described forms conklini and pigmentarius, the three separated by only minor and usually average differences. A tentative key is presented for the identification of the shallow-water cardinalfishes of the West Atlantic. |
