Abstract
Geodesy is fundamental to the problem of measuring sea-level change, providing both the techniques for measuring vertical motion, and the reference frame in which global measurements can be analyzed. GPS and vertical surveying link sea-level observations made at tide gauges to both local land motions and the global network. If care is given when installing GPS sites, they can accurately detect regional tectonic processes and be used to correct sea-level records.
