| Abstract |
Stem and leaf volatile oils obtained from Brillantaisia patula T. And. var by hydro distillation, using anall-glass apparatus were examined by capillary Gas Chromatography (GC) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Eight compounds identified in the stem oil comprised 91.0 % of it and was dominated by alcohols (76.7 %). Abundant compounds are 1octenol (45.0 %) and 3-octanol (21.0 %). The twelve compounds identified in the leaf oil make-up 83.8 % of it. It is also dominated by alcohols (55.1 %). The most abundant compound 1-octenol, accounts for 32.7 % of the leaf oil. Stem and leaf oils are characterised by a dominance of alcohols. 1-octenol can be taken as the taxonomic compound for identifying B. patula species, and the plant is a good commercial source for the alcohol. The essential oil composition of B. patula T.And. var is being reported for the first time. |
