Abstract
In the north-western part of the Pacific Ocean where waters of subarctic and subtropical origin meet and interact the distribution of zooplankton has the following pattern.:In May 1955 the southern limit of the boreal species in the uppermost 50 m was found at 37° N, but at 35° N in the 50–100 m layer. The northern limit of tropical species in May 1955 was found at 39° N in the surface layer, but below 50 m it occurred at 35° N, thus forming a distinct shelf. These limits coincided with the position of the cold intermediate layer.
