Abstract |
Variations in the composition of oxygen 18 and carbon 13 in core samples taken from the Sea of Galilee and speleothems from caves in Northern Israel show that during historical times the region went through dry and wet periods. Each period lasted from decades to centuries. Similar changes can be expected in the future. In order to prepare for such changes so as not to entirely dependent upon the randomness of the climatic regime, it is recommended that use could be made of water from fossil aquifers together with desalinated seawater for domestic use, part of which could be reused as treated sewage water. These sources could be utilized in addition to conventional surface and groundwater systems. The long-term plan for utilization of these resources should be calculated according to the ratio between storage and long-term expected demand, not to mention economic issues forecast within the framework of future socio-economic scenarios |
