Abstract
    The immunostimulating effect of a wet feed with alginate in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) challenged with Aeromonas salmonicida was studied. One group of presmolt Atlantic salmon with a mean weight of 30 g was fed a wet feed containing 5% Algibind powder, and one group was fed a commercial dry pellet. The fish were challenged with Aeromonas salmonicida by a cohabitant model after a feeding period of 6 weeks. Serum samples for immune parameter analyses were collected from fish before and after the feeding period. Mortalities in the group fed Algibind feed were significantly (p < .01) lower than in the control group, both at the level of 50% total mortality and at the end of challenge. Higher values were recorded both for complete hemolytic activity (CH, p < .05) and for the difference between complete and spontaneous hemolytic activity (CH - SH, p < .001) in fish fed with Algibind feed. Alternative complement activation and lysozyme activity were not affected by the Algibind feed.
