Abstract
The main objective of this work was to devise a method to measure the production and turnover rate of a macrophyte with thin leaves such as Ruppia cirrhosa (Petagna) Grande. Net production was calculated from values of biomass, decomposition rates and mortality obtained in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon (Tancada lagoon, Ebro Delta, NE Spain). Overall, the biomass of rhizomes and roots was constant during the annual cycle, but stem biomass varied substantially. Above-ground biomass peaked in September with 532 g AFDW m-2 and reached a minimum in April with 30 g AFDW m-2. The net production was calculated to be 361.1 g C m-2 per year, which is the highest value for R. cirrhosa reported in the literature, and a turnover rate of 1.34. The net production obtained by this method is within the estimates based on harvesting techniques (303-545 g C m-2 per year).
