Abstract
    Detailed study of coralla of Goniastrea has revealed significant alterations of some characteristic features of the calices; these modifications originate (1) in a particular localisation of the calices on the surface of the colony : for instance the shape as well as various skeletal structures of peripherical calices may differ considerably from that of more central ones topping the colony; (2) in the interfering action of associated boring organisms such as molluscs or cirripeds.Post-mortem modification due to physical, chemical or biological factors may further more attenuate some diagnostic characteristics or even erase them completely.
