Abstract
A study in comparative morphology of the families of Siluriformes made possible to group them in 7 suborders; among our conclusions we point out that, of the 7 suborders, five, including the most primitive one, live in South America. The most generalized Characins too live there. We have lastly found in the literature that Characins and Catfishes are for the less able to tolerate great salinity variations. That is why we think that Darlington’s theory, that the birthplace and the dispersion center of ail the Ostariophysi is tropical Asia, must be reconsidered. In a recent paper, Myers developed also a serious objection against it. We propose to consider South-America as origin continent for Characins and Catfishes and we think they probably came through the Atlantic Ocean to the Ancient World.
