Abstract
In September 2009, scientists from the US, Netherlands, Germany and Canada participated in the Methane In The Arctic Shelf (MITAS) project onboard the USCGC Polar Sea (WAGB-11) in the coastal region of the Alaskan Beaufort Sea. The expedition goals were to investigate shallow sediment and water column methane source(s), flux and cycling and to evaluate the relative contributions of methane from near shore permafrost and offshore deep sediment methane hydrate deposits. Sediment and water column sampling locations were selected based on the results of geophysical surveys conducted using 3.5 and 12 kHz seismic sub-bottom profilers and acoustic mapping using 180 kHz multi-beam sonar. Prelimnary data on shallow sediment porewater geochemical profiles will be presented to provide an initial interpretation of the spatial variation in vertical methane fluxes. These data will be integrated with other geophysical, biological, and biogeochemical data from the MITAS project to support interpretation of sediment and water column methane and carbon cycling and the estimation of vertical migration of sediment gases and pore fluids, rates of microbial production, and spatial variation in the microbial community diversity.
