Abstract
Adjacent ships moving relatively such as meeting and overtaking, and operating in side-by-side or in tandem array will induce hydrodynamic interaction which has significant influence on ship maneuverability. In this paper, a numerical study on the hydrodynamic interaction between ships undergoing meeting and overtaking in restricted waters is carried out. The unsteady RANS equation in conjunction with a RNG k-ε turbulence model is solved. The relative motion of ships is dealt with by using the dynamic mesh method and sliding interface technique. Numerical simulation of the three-dimensional unsteady viscous flow around the ships is conducted, and the hydrodynamic interaction is calculated. The results at different water depth and distance to bank are compared to investigate the influence of bottom clearance and bank on the ship-to-ship interaction.
