Abstract
Concern for safe towing in waves, it is important to capture the interaction effects between tow and towed ship motions in waves. This paper discusses the vertical motion characteristics (including surge motion) of tow and towed ships and the dynamic interaction between those ships in regular head waves. A practical calculation method which can calculate the 3-DOF motions (surge, heave and pitch) of both tow and towed ships is presented. Using this method, the motion amplitude of tow and towed ships in various wave lengths are predicted. Moreover, the towing line length is selected variously. As a result, dynamic interaction components affecting each other are detected. Also, it is recognized that the magnitude of towing line length is deeply related to the ship’s surge motion and the steady towing line tension affects the restoring force with respect to the ship’s heave and pitch motions.
