Abstract
The authors propose practical prediction method for linear derivatives for lateral force and yaw moment in shallow water. The linear derivatives in shallow water can be calculated by multiplying those in deep water by correction factor accounting for shallow water effect. The correction factor is a function of the ratio of ship‟s draught to water depth. It was obtained based on the hydrodynamic forces measured by captive model tests. Parameters contained in the correction factor can be estimated with ship‟s principal particulars and a few parameters representing stern form. It is shown that calculated hydrodynamic forces using the linear derivatives estimated with the correction factor agree well with measured results. It can be said that the correction factor is useful to estimate linear hydrodynamic derivatives in shallow water from the practical points of view.
