Abstract
Under the QUEST4D project objectives, the questions of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)'s indirect influence on the Belgian Continental Shelf's benthos' population dynamics through the Scheldt’s estuary’s nutrients regulating has been risen. Such possible relation remained to be examined through an investigation of the river’s streamflow’s response to the NAO index.
Lineary regressions were first established between both NAO index and streamflow at various timescales. No timescales, wether seasonal, monthly or ten-days, have revealed significant linear relation with practically null R2 throughout the analysis.
An unlineary relation, for which the Spearman’s correlation coefficient was used, hardly reveals any different yearly NAO / Q relation with a ρ not exceeding 15 %. Before concluding uncorrelation between the two factors, differentiating stormflow from baseflow within the streamflow might reveal more robust relationships at the shortest timescales, given the watershed’s time of concentration.
An endeavor to follow other authors’ preceding NAO correlations with environmental factors on their methodology did motivate the use of cumsum logarithmic transformations. These have only corroborated the absence of correlation between NAO and Scheldt streamflow.
