Abstract
The biology and chemistry of the escape reactions of marine invertebrates to predatory starfish are discussed. The material secreted by the starfish Marthasterias glacialis, which induces escape reactions in sensitive animals, has been shown to be a saponin (steroid glycoside). It is suggested that the escape reactions of all molluscs may be due to saponins or other surface-active substances.
