Abstract
The metabolic temperature (M-T) response of 5 geographically separated populations of the hermit crab Pagurus longicarpus was determined in order to assess the importance of this physiological parameter to its zoogeography. By utilizing acclimated and acutely determined metabolic-temperature curves the relative degree of genetic and phenotypic plasticity in this species could be compared with that of other estuarine and oceanic species. Distinct differences between populations of Pagurus were observed. In general the more northern populations were better adapted to low temperatures. However, a simple correlation between M-T responses and climatic adaptation was not noted when making intraspecific comparisons. These findings are similar to those of the fiddler crab. Interspecific comparisons demonstrate that temperate zone species and those oceanic animals exposed to wide thermal variation exhibit a greater degree of liability in metabolic response to temperature than stenothermal organisms either from the tropics or cold waters.
