Abstract
Laboratory and field studies have proven the existence of temperature-dependant dormancy in the egg of Acartia tonsa. A winger 'resting' egg has not previously been recorded in the life history of a marine copepod. This phenomenon is believed to be the mechanism responsible for the spring resurgence of this species following its normal mid-winter disappearance in North America coastal areas and estuaries north of 40 degree latitude. Cold-induced dormancy was also observed in sub-tropical specimens of A. tonsa. Evidence is presented that suggests egg dormancy may be a common mechanism of overwintering for many species of neritic, boreal copepods.
