| Abstract |
It is quit often overlooked that a cell can only exert its specific functions after it has acquired a specific morphology. This can be succinctly stated as: form percedes function. This is particularly true for epithelial and muscle cells, which make up a large percentage of the body of any animal species. All clesses of hormones that have been studied in this respect, seem to make use of the cytoskeleton, either during their sythesis, transport, secretion or when influencing their target cells. The best documented cytoskeleton-mediated effects of hoemones are related to growth, mouvement, transepithelial transport of water and control of the expression of some genes. There is also a link between some hormone receptors and the cytoskeleton. |
