Abstract
The 14C-PCBs uptake and elimination kinetics by freshwater fish, guppy (Lebiese reticulate) and marine fish (Scorpeana porcus) were studied through the contaminated water and food. Very low PCBs concentrations were used, 0.27 --2.50 ng/ml in the water and 8.5 and 35.6 ng/g in the food. The bioconcentration factor, dependent on the PCBs concentration in the water is 4700 for guppies and is lower for Scorpeana (550) on a wet weight basis. For marine fish. Scorpeana PCBs direct uptake occurs mainly through gills and guts. The uptake efficiency of guppies from the food is about 60% and the biomagnification factor < 1. The equilibrium in freshwater and seawater fish direct uptake from the water is reached after 1 or 2 days and independent on the dose. The equilibrium in fish indirect uptake from the food is reached after 12-22 days and is dependent on the PCBs levels in the food. The accumulation and elimination processes are very different, the accumulation rate is quicker than the elimination rate. In addition, it was found that the PCBs evaporation loss from the water was considerable.
