Abstract
A series of experiments was conducted to evaluate different designs of tank recirculation systems which would give a better representative of survival, are easy to handle and maintain, and fit for small scale experimental set-up. The system developed (upwelling conical tank recirculation system) was further optimized to test the larval performance of the giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii de Man, taken from a broodstock fed with a diet containing low amounts of (n-3) HUFA. Dietary treatments used were Artemia enriched with coconut oil emulsion, E50 (a self-emulsifying oil containing 50% HUFA), and E50+20% Vitamin C. Results showed that survival would still be high but with low metamorphosis for the E50 fed treatment and a lower survival for the coconut oil fed treatment. The effect of Vitamin C on weight and stress resistance is clearly demonstrated.
