Abstract
    There was an inverse correlation between VO2 and individual heterozygosity (H) in a single cohort of Mytilus edulis L.; this relationship provides an energetic basis for higher growth rates among more heterozygous individuals. Previously, a positive H-growth rate correlation had been documented for younger individuals from the same cohort examined here. By the time of the present study, however, there was an inverse correlation between H and growth rate. This reversal of the H-growth rate relationship suggests that differential mortality, particularly among small homozygous individuals, had occurred. A better understanding of the heterozygosity-growth rate relationship will come from analyses of the mechanisms of apparent allozyme heterosis and from further whole-animal studies of heterozygosity-related differences in metabolism.
