Abstract
    Microbial abundance and production were monitored off the coast of Florida at the interface of outer continental shelf water and nutrient-rich Gulf Stream water intruding onto the shelf. Primary production and bacterial uptake of glucose at the interface increased rapidly. Microbial abundance and activity at the interface were 10-50 x greater than the overlying shelf water. Rates of photosynthesis at the interface reached 1 gC m-3 day-1. Initially, the majority of photosynthesis in the intruded waters was by < 10µm autotrophs adapted to low light levels. Turnover time of glucose by heterotrophs decreased from 1800 to 38 h. Bacterioplankton appeared to be highly coupled to increases in primary productivity.
