Abstract
Differences were found in concentrations of N2O porewater profiles obtained from cores treated with and without mercury (II) chloride. These differences were considerable in the dark-coloured part of the sediment. It was demonstrated that the action of HgCl2 on insoluble FeS resulted in an increase in dissolved iron and that N2O was produced due to the chemical reduction of nitrite by Fe2+ at pH 8. ZnCl2 also caused a chemical reduction of nitrite, but - compared with HgCl2 - to a lesser extent.
